The 2016 Queensland Music Awards is Queenslands biggest music awards night, and we are pleased to announce that NQ artists have a good showing in the list of finalists.
Cairns based Leanne Tennant is one of four finalists in the running to win the Billy Thorpe scholarship.
The scholarship, named in honour of the late great Billy Thorpe, who passed away in February 2007, was designed to help develop and nurture the future of rock and roll in QLD, where Thorpe originally started in the industry. Leanne cleaned up at last years Qmusic awards being nominated in several categories, and taking out the 2015 ‘Blues/Roots’ award.
Sian Evans is nominated in the Country section. Although now based in Brisbane, Sian is originally from Cairns, and has played many local festivals and shows including Resonate. Sian is nominated for her single “Cold Feet”
Greta Stanley has been nominated in the regional section for her excellent “Bedroom City” EP. Greta is also a regular at Resonate, and a fixture at local festivals and gigs. Greta is signed to local label Junkie Uncle. Make sure you check out Eli Birchall’s awesome review of Bedroom City, or even better, grab yourself a copy!
Abergowrie based act “The Gowrie Boys” are also nominated in the regional section and the Schools section. The Gowrie Boys are a group of yr 11 and 12 students from St Teresa’s College Abergowrie (nr Townsville, QLD). The mentoring program kicked off last year, with a track titled ‘The Brotherhood’. This was a project facilitated by Toby Finlayson from Desert Pea Media in partnership with Vibe Australia and The Smugglers of Light Foundation. The song won the 2011 Australian Indigenous Hip Hop (BUMP) Award (Urban Youth Category), and has over 19,000 hits on Youtube.
It is great to see North QLD artists once again out there kicking goals!
