In what could be a song about an elusive friend or love interest, Aurelle Brunjes makes her debut with Magpie, a single dedicated to the often-feared native Australian bird.
Aurelle wrote Magpie when she was home for an extended period and would look out the window to see about 50 magpies waiting outside.
“The house would be so quiet, but outside there were 50 magpies and it was as if they didn’t know I was there, but were everywhere I looked,” she said.
The North Queensland singer-songwriter said the song came to her unplanned and off-the-cuff.
“I love how magpies sound,” Aurelle said.
Anyone who’s watched magpies will relate to the lyrics of them wearing black jackets, their reputations, and their songs, and Aurelle even likens them to a feathered version of the original Man In Black, Johnny Cash.
“I like my listeners to be intrigued and curious,” she said.
“I like country music that’s a bit different, and I want to offer that with my own music.”
Produced by Michael Moko, he played most of the instruments and the song has an upbeat, but whimsical feel.
Although this is the North Queensland artist’s debut single, Aurelle has been songwriting for about five years, getting more serious during the three to record her originals. Prior to that, she was performing in bands for more than a decade.
Country music speaks to the teacher-by-day, as Aurelle lives the country lifestyle in Dimbulah, and wants to convey that through her story songs.
“I live in rural Queensland and country music is part of the lifestyle here,” she said.
“I love songwriting and I love lyrics and my husband is also a big country music fan.”
