With their feet planted in the cool school tradition of jazz, Bungalow lays bare their hearts, holding them out for the audience to behold.
Based in Japan, Bungalow comprises of pianist Koichi Sato, bassist Hiroshi Ikejiri, drummer Ko Omura, and saxophonist Mike Rivett.
Rivett, a National Jazz Awards winner, is currently based in Cairns and recently played with former local collective, The Montgomery Brothers, at their farewell show in Cairns.
Leader of the Bungalow quartet, Rivett studied in Sydney and New York before moving to Tokyo to join forces with Bungalow to produce their first album, Unseen Scenes, in 2015.
With a sound described as introspective, bold and energized, experiencing Bungalow live is highly emotional and engaging.
Their new album, You Already Know, has received widespread appeal with comments from jazz legends like David Liebman (saxophonist for Miles Davis in the 70s) commenting:
“This present recording is what modern jazz should be all about: changing textures, good communication on some very sophisticated music, and a clever and adventurous use of harmony and rhythm. But most of all, very soulful!! Mike and his fellow musicians have given the listener something worthwhile to mull over. Great work!”
New Zealand born, Australian jazz legend, Mike Nock was also impressed with Bungalow’s latest recording.
“I’m loving this recording – old wine in new bottles. It’s inspiring to hear such creative and intelligent music being made by the younger generation – it gives me hope for the future!
