She’s one of Australia’s most unique and fearless artists, as evidence by her electric shows, spine-tingling vocal deliveries and outrageous costumes.
Now, Cairns fans have the chance to witness the powerhouse performer that is Ngaiire (rhymes with diary), when she takes the Tanks stage on Friday the 29th of September as part of her first solo national tour since 2014.
Born in the Papua New Guinean town Lae, Ngaiire spent her first few years in New Zealand where she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
After years of being subjected to treatment, Ngaiire finally kicked the cancer at the age of 7.
The cancer – Ganglioneuroblastoma, and her experience of it, inspired her second album, Blastoma.
Growing up listening to reggae, the Australian Top 40 and her Mum’s Mariah Carey and Cliff Richard albums, it wasn’t until Ngaiire’s family moved to Australia that her musical outlook went wide lens; Ngaiire discoverrf artists like Ani DiFranco, Jeff Buckley, Tool, Debussy and Gershwin for the first time.
Joining bands and studying for her Bachelor of Jazz Studies at the Conservatorium of Music in Central Queensland, Ngaiire ended up on Australian Idol where her rendition of Back to the Middle was ranked in the ‘all time’ top 10 Australian Idol performances.
Ngaiire then went on to a long period of touring overseas and in Australia with roots collective Blue King Brown, and mentor and electronic maestro Paul Mac.
The release of future-soul debut Lamentations in 2013 led her to her first ever slot at Glastonbury and shows with Alicia Keys and John Legend; and while she’s spent time writing music for dance companies, creating crazy sound installations for David Walsh’s MONA FOMA and collaborating with fashion designers, her biggest project has been new record Blastoma.
Ngaiire released Blastoma’s first single Once in 2015 which was received by a rapturous media and was added to full rotation on triple j within weeks; subsequently earning a spot on triple j’s Hottest 100.
