Singing Up Country – Yirrmal, Kahl Wallis and Emily Wurramara

A NAIDOC Week event featuring three formidable young Australian artists Yirrmal, Kahl Wallis and Emily Wurramara, sharing their songs and stories in what promises to be a moving evening of music at the Tanks on Friday the 7th of July.

An event informed by the 2017 NAIDOC WEEK theme – Our Languages Matter.

Yirrmal Marika, from North-East Arnhem Land takes inspiration from his Grandfather, Dr Yunupingu, former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, fusing tradition and contemporary music with class and passion.

Lead singer and songwriter for indie/alternative band The Medics, environmental and social activist, storyteller, and now solo performer, Kahl Wallis has played on stages all around the nation and internationally.

Queensland Music Award nominee Emily Wurramara from Groote Eylandt, is a seasoned musician who has toured her sound nationally and abroad, performing alongside artists like Shellie Morris and Troy Cassar Daley.

The 2017 National NAIDOC theme – Our Languages Matter, aims to celebrate the essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

Cairns is the official host city for the 2017 National NAIDOC Awards; to be held on Saturday 1 July to celebrate the opening of NAIDOC Week 2017 (2-9 July).
