Jason Bruer’s powerhouse sextet Hammerhead burst onto the Sydney scene some years ago playing from a catalogue of music largely inspired by the late 50s and early 60s ‘Hard Bop’ movement. They will be hitting the Tanks on Friday the 8th of November as part of The Tanks “Jazz Up North” series of gigs.
Over time, the music has morphed into a set of all original compositions from the pen of band-leader Bruer, showcasing an eclectic array of influences including hard-edged Urban Jazz, Funk, Hard Bop & Chamber Jazz illustrating a considerable contemporary shift in approach & style.
Since the release of Hammerhead’s debut album Mozaic in 2014, the band have only risen in stature, subsequently playing gigs both on a local and national scale.
Gigs include Manly Jazz Festival, Thredbo Jazz Festival, Capitol Jazz Project and Wangaratta Jazz & Blues Festival in addition to their monthly residency at Marrickville’s jazz haven Lazybones Lounge.
Hammerhead have also performed sold out shows at shows at Gods Café (Canberra), The Jazz Basement (Wodonga) and at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music.
This concert will see them performing material from their second CD Turning Point.
