Jake Martin is somebody who stands out, far more than your average chap with an acoustic guitar.
Upon watching Jake play, it is obvious that this is a man whose doesn’t care what you think about him. His songs tell well weathered stories of times both good and bad, past and future, with an intriguing air of passion, love and frustration.
The world was introduced to masses of one-man “folk-punk” fodder since Frank Turner packed up his punk band and broke the mainstream. But Jake is different. His songs reek of subtle cheek; “I don’t play Frank Turner covers, I don’t want to be your heroes…”.
He sheds the “nose in the air” attitude, so often seen in the genre. If you were to heckle Jake, he is not the type of guy who has a whinge about how you hurt his feelings. He’s the kind of guy who would more likely heckle you back and demand you buy him a cider immediately.
For the best part of the last decade, Jake was better known as the front man for Brighton ska heavyweights, The Junk. After achieving overseas popularity and the totally understandable frustrations of playing in a ska band, Jake turned his focus to his solo material and released his 2014 debut E.P, “F***’s Sake Jake”. The E.P of which, was very well received.
Finally taking a brake from such a tumultuous amount of touring, Jake eventually returned home to Brighton and recorded his first full length album, ‘We Take Them At Dawn’ which he released in March of this year on the label, Aaahh Real Records.
This is the record that Jake is on tour to support and with a mountain of shows to look forward to, his last stop is our humble city of Cairns on Sunday the 26th of June.
In the first instalment of Acousticopolypse, The Grand Hotel will play host to Jake’s authentically English brand of folk-punk, with the show boasting free entry and a great list of local supports. Come down and heckle yourself into buying this bloke a cider.
Support acts include Hungry Lungs, live and unplugged for the first time ever, one of Cairns’ most popular new artists, Josh Hore, a new face on the scene in Eric Broadway and local loser and yours truly – Wil Stopper.
