Juliana Areias – Jazz Up North at The Tanks

Nicknamed the ‘Bossa Nova Baby’, Perth-based singer and songwriter Juliana Areias brings a new edge to traditional Brazilian rhythms in a show set to hit The Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 3rd June. Considered a melting pot of Brazilian music, Juliana Areias is revered for her passionate and personal stage presence which has helped make her a familiar face at international jazz festivals such as Montreux Jazz Festival and Auckland Festival.

Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and later living in New Zealand and Switzerland, Juliana Areias featured heavily on 6 of Márcio Catunda albums between 1997 and 2010 and toured international with him before later moving to Perth and releasing her first album ‘Bossa Nova Baby’ in 2015.The album contains 12 original tracks all influenced by places she has lived and travelled, with the songs mixed in between standards during her live show.

“I do a contemporary recreation at my shows. I like to do a dialogue of Bossa Nova, blending elements of Jazz, Samba and other styles such as Pop, Funk and Reggae; with it all blending back into Bossa Nova”.

Having performed at some of biggest festivals in the world, Juliana Areias has also performed locally at the Perth International Jazz Festival and the Sydney Opera House as part of the 70 year celebration of relationships between Australia and Brazil.

“I’ve been very lucky to perform at a lot of big festivals around the world but I was much honored to perform at the Sydney Opera House, it was amazing to perform there. Montreux Jazz Festival was also a special one for me, but I do just love any chance to perform. My first gig was at a beach in Brazil when I was young, and I always think back to how special that was. I also do a regular gig in Perth with just voice and guitar each week, generally to a small crowd, but I really love it. I just love to sing and perform”.

Coming to Cairns as part of the Jazz Up North series, Areias will be bringing her highly regarded backing band along to The Tanks for a night of Bossa Nova, Samba and Jazz.

“It’s my first time in Cairns and I’m really looking forward to seeing the sights and meeting the people. I will be staying for a few days after the show so I look forward to checking out some of the local musicians too”.
