Schoolfight – Bringin The Fight To Cairns

Todd Macalpine catches up with Schoolfight’s erstwhile frontman, Emcyte ahead of their shows at  Kuranda Roots, and the Jack pre party.

TM:- Schoolfight has be around for a while now, how has the Schoolfight sound evolved since your debut  “Big Man on Champers”?

Emcyte:- I like to think of BMOC as our punk era, it was rough , hectic, angry white boy hiphop. Schoolfight has definitely relaxed a little over the years, we are more confident in the music we are making, and I think we are better musos. Curse of work is a nice mix of aus hip hop style some reggae vibes and just a wee hint of rock, its production is seamless and Im very proud of it….only took us 7 years to get it done…

TM:- Who is producing the new Schoolfight E.P “Ease Of Summer”?

Emcyte:- Production this time around will be handled by ourselves and a bloke called Cris Stevens, he mixes and masters some massive aus hiphop names, a great guy with bulk years of experience. He gets schoolfight, and what we are chasing. Some of the acts Cris has worked with are- Dj Vadim, Task Force, Mark B and Blade, Mr Thing, The Herbaliser plus lots of old school drum and bass, t power, shy fx.

TM:- It must be a bit of a homecoming gig for you at Kuranda, I notice on the bill there are a few bands playing that include members from your musical past..

Emcyte:- Returning to Cairns / Kuranda to play is the best thing, we love the tropics, the weather the crowd and crew. I write alot of my music with cairns in mind, we are always on that BBQ & beer vibe! Kuranda roots is a sweet festival and we are super stoked to have got the call up this year!

TM:- The Dialers, who are on the Kuranda Roots bill include all members (except yourself) of your outfit from back in the day “Souvenir City”, any chance of busting out a Souv track or two with them?

Emcyte:- Haha there has been talk about it, I’m keen for a collab, hopefully they find some room for me on the album…hint hint. Jesse, Captain Janeway and Dalamine are some of my favorite people, and helped get me started in music, I love em, and can’t wait to see the dialers do their thing!

TM:- Anything you want to add for your NQ fans?

Emcyte:- we are looking forward to seeing everybody at the jack 19th june! Get off your tanned tropical asses and support us! haha
