Tyrone Noonan – Palimpsest

Featuring the soaring and powerful vocals of Tyrone Noonan (ex. George) at the helm, jazz quartet Palimpsest bring their timeless groove to The Tanks as part of the Jazz Up North Series on Friday 13th November.

Fusing elements of swing, Latin, soul, modern and folk melodies, the jazz project from singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Noonan released its highly acclaimed self-titled album in late 2004 and has performed at numerous festivals across the years including Woodford Folk Festival and St Kilda Fest.

Best known for being the fabric of Aria award winning band ‘George’, Tyrone Noonan started Palimpsest as a Jazz piano duo in the late 90’s as a side project and shortly after George’s hiatus relocated overseas to London and New York where he continued Palimpsest using each scene’s best players.

With a love for playing with different musicians, this evening at The Tanks will take on a local flavour featuring Cairns’ own musicians Enzo Russo and Joe Vizzone ( “from the local music mafia!” as Ty puts it) as part of the Palimpsest quartet. Alongside classical trained pianist Catherine Lynagh the night promises to be an entrancing journey across continents, cultures and song-writing era’s.

Lynagh and Noonan possess a strong musical bond having worked closely together on his stage show ‘Vegas’ and their work in Palimpsest will no doubt highlight their growing connection.

“She’s such an incredible musician. It’s interesting because she’s come more from the classical world and we’re working together in Jazz, which is something I thought wouldn’t normally happen. But to her credit, she’s a classical musician who can swing. This can be difficult if you don’t naturally have it. No offense to classical musicians, but most don’t naturally have it.”

Speaking to Tyrone, it doesn’t take long to form the impression that he simply loves music and he quickly points out “I’ve got a lot going on!”

Involved in numerous projects including the band Sonic Lines and staring in his own Sinatra inspired stage show ‘Vegas’. Ty also finds time to remix tracks with Dave Goode from The Potbelleez , work on his next solo album due for release in the new year and gig constantly on a range of instruments  and styles.

As for future releases for Palimpsest:

“I defiantly want to do another jazz album, that’ll be on the cards’

One couldn’t help but ask about Tyrone’s ex band ‘George’ that shot to fame in 2002 with their Aria award winning number 1 debut album ‘Polyserena’. Sharing the vocals and song writing duties with his sister Katie Noonan, ‘Polyserena’ featured much loved numbers ‘Special Ones’, ‘Run’ and ‘Breathe In Now’ and won over a legion of fans Australia wide. After a heavy touring schedule and the follow up ‘Unity’, the band then went on hiatus, last performing together in December 2004.

Although rumors of a reunion have been whispered in the past, the idea has never come to fruition.

“I’ve certainly thought about it, I think maybe more than the other guys, especially when I came back from overseas. I put the word out there at the time, as you do, but it didn’t happen then. I’ll say this; I’m certainly hoping to the possibility one day, but I don’t know if it’s going to happen. It would be awesome, but I’m not sure.”

“I’ll just say it publicly now. I would do it”

“Next year is our 20 year anniversary so if it’s going to happen, it should be happening soon. Either way I’m determined to re-release our first three independent Ep’s as they are currently not available.”

Being no stranger to Cairns having performed many times in the region over his career including last year with Sonic Lines, this will be Noonan’s first time at the iconic Tanks Arts Centre.

“I’ve never played at The Tanks before, I’ve always wanted to as I’ve heard it’s a great gig. This will be my first time so I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

After notably pointing out the show will be on Friday The 13th:

“Hopefully it’ll bring out some freaks and make the gig a little more spicy!” (laughter)
