With songs inspired by a movie about a nymphomaniac, named after a 1927 Blind Lemon Jefferson blues number, Qld Music Award Winner, 2016 Billy Thorpe Scholarship finalist Leanne Tennant is set to release her sophomore record RED WINE, LATE NIGHTS on August 5th followed by an extensive national tour. Apart from playing shows in capital cities the tour will also include regional North Queensland dates around her home town of Cairns.
The lead single from RED WINE, LATE NIGHTS “Gentle Annie” has had an amazing response since its June release scoring official rotation on Double J and picking up huge praise from Rolling Stone Australia alongside the songs online premiere.
“The first track lifted from her forthcoming second album, Red Wine, Late Nights — teasingly edges towards complete collapse or euphoric explosion (dependent on your own perspective), as Tennant (pictured above) slowly succumbs to the soulful darkness of her late-night world, with her indirect, dissipating pleas perfectly matched by the clip’s personal imagery of flickering recollections and fading memories.” – Rolling Stone Australia
The record is full of ‘real moments’, which have been beautifully captured by Brisbane producer, Jamie Trevaskis (Robert Forster, The Good Ship), in his all-analog studio in Mt. Nebo just outside Brisbane. Tennant worked with musicians including Ben Ely (Regurgitator), Ben Carstens (Mexico City), and Jamie Trevaskis himself to bring together a truly unique, dark and untouched record.
With most of the tracks recorded live in one-take RED WINE, LATE NIGHTS is a beautifully raw and authentic record full of refreshingly untouched features, gritty bass lines and of course Leanne Tennant’s captivating vocals. “I’ve always wanted to record in an Analog studio as it gives you the opportunity to play your songs live, rather than in many broken pieces which are then stitched together. I had to learn to not focus as much on my flaws but focus on the entire piece as it was meant to be”.
The recording process was a transforming experience for Leanne Tennant, and put her well out of her comfort zone moving her sound in a new direction. “My last album I had a fairly clear picture of what I wanted before I started recording. This time, I let the songs develop and change into what they needed to be as I was performing them. It was all about feel.”
