Emma Louise – Supercry

One of Cairns’ most loved musical exports, singer songwriter Emma Louise, is returning home to share songs from her new album ‘Supercry’, with a special show at The Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 17th September.

Recorded in France with Belgian producer Pascal Gabriel (Kylie Minogue, Dido, Ladyhawke), Supercry has been achieving national attention with an upcoming 13 date tour and commercial radio giving plenty of coverage to Under Flow, Talk Baby Talk and the new single West End Kids.

Returning to Cairns for the first time since performing at the Australia Day Celebrations on The Esplanade in January, Emma Louise was looking forward to her trip home to perform at The Tanks on September 17th.

“It’s actually my favourite venue in Australia that I’ve ever played, it’s just so beautiful. I’ll be home for a week, which I’m really looking forward to”.

If you know Emma’s music, you will understand the emotional storms her songs evoke; with her latest release Supercry staying true to her practice and holding nothing back.  The 25 year old singer admitted to growing a lot since her debut LP and felt more comfortable in the recording studio for Supercry.

“With the first album (Vs Head Vs Heart) it was the first time I had really handed over my music to other people to work with and I had a bit of a rough time dealing with it. This time around I was a bit more comfortable to give up a lot of control and focussed more on my own thing.”

Catapulting onto the national stage with her 2011 EP ‘Full Hearts and Empty Rooms’ and continuing the success with 2013’s ‘Vs Head Vs Heart’, Emma Louise would later take a much needed break to simple reconnect with herself and her music.

“I definitely needed a break and I guess I was working with the wrong people at the time. It kind of chipped away with my relationship with music. Before it was just me and my guitar and I’d play gigs and busk. Then all of a sudden I was exposing my music to so many people and I guess I lost that intimacy with music. I kind of needed to find time to just go back to what music is the truth of it. Even now I still have to remind myself to write what is true to you, because there is a lot of pressure to be commercial.”

Asked had music not worked out for the former Cairns State High School student what she would have done?

“I guess I really had no plans at all (in school). I was just in love with music and that was what I was doing (after school), paying rent and stuff. My parents were like ‘you should have a back-up plan’, but I didn’t. I thought about being a Vet Nurse but I was pretty much just prepared to be a musician and write songs. I didn’t really think about to be honest”

Emma Louise performs at The Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 17th September. Doors open 6.30pm. Show starts 7.30pm. Tickets from Ticketlink. ‘Supercry’ is available now from emmalouise.net
