An album launch with a difference! One of Cairns favorite folk troubadours Jeremiah Johnson is staging a massive fundraiser this Saturday evening at The German Club with the release of his new studio album ‘Humming Of The Axis’ and premier of his latest film clip “Cracks in the Concrete”. The night is billed as a fundraiser for an upcoming national tour with all proceeds raised going towards the purchase of a bus to ease the musician travels across the country.
Featuring a stellar cast of musicians behind him including Steven ‘Papa’ Stanley, Tristan Barton and Simon McMennamin, ‘Humming Of The Axis’ was recorded at Big Sister Studios with Mark Meyers and later mastered at Lurssen Mastering in Hollywood by Ruben Cohen.
Catching up with Jeremiah for a quick chat about the release, he explained using a different recording process from previous efforts.
“It was all about ‘the take’, if the take was no good; we’d start the song again and play from start to finish as a band would live. Sometimes to a click track, sometimes warts and all. A record use to be an audible reference of what and how people were playing at that point in time, that’s how it got its name, a record. There were moments that we deviated from this process with the songs “Cracks in the Concrete”, with Marks signature ambient reverb and delays on the vocal harmonies at the end of the song, that’s something I won’t recreate live”.
“I wanted to make sure this album didn’t sound like it was produced, I wanted it to sound like it was recorded. I’d been listening to lots of recordings from Skip James, Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Johnny Cash, Jeff Lang, Jeff Healey and over the period of writing the songs I realized they all recorded live and had a special quality because of that reason”.
With a number of ticket options available for the fundraiser (all including his latest album), the evening will also have two shows with an earlier slot for families with young children. All details can be found here at the Facebook event page and all proceeds raised will go toward purchasing a tour bus.
“The bus will improve quality of life on the road. Previous tours have taken up to six months in a 1986 Toyota Troop carrier that I owned and repaired for eleven years, which has now proven to be too small and very uncomfortable. The bus will be used to carry out more of my regional tours of the East Coast and I have a bigger goal of touring the entire country in it, likely in 2016/ 2017.
The album title “Humming Of The Axis” is taken from the track “Cracks In The Concrete” which video clip will also be premiered on the evening. The clip was made possible by funding assistance with RADF grants from Cairns Regional Council and was also directed and produced by Jeremiah.
“It was sixteen hours nonstop filming on the Saturday, backed up by another two hours at sunrise on Sunday day. My job was to align all the elements as we only had a two-day window. Threadless films and the cast worked like absolute maniacs. It was filmed in a lot of locations around Cairns, with lots of equipment, wardrobe changes, set changes and it wasn’t easy! Everyone rose to the challenge and gave 200%. They were an absolute dream crew!”
