Sworf Ezekiel

‘On the Record’ at the Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel is cementing its growing reputation as Cairns’ freshest live music venue, bringing Ezekiel Ox (formerly Mammal) and his ‘On the Record’ show to the venue this Saturday night.

Ezekiel has a well earned reputation as one of the most entertaining performers to grace the stage in Australian rock, with his hardline views and commitment to his cause ensuring any show featuring him will always deliver something special.

Not content to just have the one major draw card, organizers have assembled an eclectic selection of local musicians to support the show.

Starting the night will be Cameron Cusack, a Cairns based singer/songwriter and national touring artist who has shared the stage with Troy Casser-Daley and made the finals of the Toyota Star Maker competition.

Following Cameron will be indie/rock trio Jimmy the One who are fast earning themselves a reputation as an exciting and unpredictable live act.

Indie/folk soloist Ray-Lee who writes and performs her own songs is up next, with a performance that has been described as beautiful and breathtaking.

Local punk rock legends Meat Bikini will follow, with Kane and the boys never failing to liven up the dance floor with their attitude – laden punk. These boys have been a mainstay on the Cairns music scene for as long as I can remember and maintain a youthful freshness and exuberance that almost dares you not to get up and mosh.

The talented and creative Leanne Tennant graces the stage next, with her subtle blend of rockabilly, blues and indie folk seeing her recognized as one of the region’s best female artists. Her music has been played on Triple J and continues to sooth the ears of music lovers everywhere, with her distinctively beautiful voice and flawless live performances earning her accolades and respect among a wide cross section of musical tastes.

As deserving main support, Sworf will play what will sadly be their final show with guitarist Leigh Jeffries.

Leigh has been a vital cog in Sworf’s rise to one of Cairns leading exponents of hard rock, with his guitar playing and song writing talents the foundation of many an awesome live performance.
Unfortunately, it is too early to speculate on the future for this hard rocking bunch of miscreants, but rest assured it will take one hell of a replacement to fill the void.

Leigh, thank you for your service to the Cairns music scene, and from what I understand he won’t be completely lost to the cause, but more on that at a later date.

Ezekiel Ox rounds out the night, with a solo show that promises a blend of the old and the new, as well as spoken word and Hip Hop beats.

The only thing you can be sure of with an Ezekiel Ox performance is that you can’t be sure of anything except being entertained, and it is testament to the hard work done behind the scenes by people like Col and the crew at the Grand Hotel that a performer of his caliber has included Cairns on his tour schedule.

There is a little something for everybody so it is fair to say that music will be the winner here, but either way, those lucky enough to get a ticket to this limited capacity show will be treated to a unique and passionate performance from one of Australia’s finest talents and musical geniuses.
