Kanishk – In The Water

Far North Queensland-based singer-songwriter Kanishk releases his much anticipated debut EP ‘In The Water this Friday 10th June at Lilo Wet Bar. Produced by Mark Myers (The Middle East/Emma Louise) and mastered by Grammy award-winning engineer William Bowden (King Will Sound/Gotye), the 5 track offering has a stripped back feel with influences of Matt Corby, Ben Howard and Vance Joe shining through the listen.

Since moving from Melbourne to Cairns two years ago, Kanishk has honed his song writing skills since settling into the Far North lifestyle and developed an impressive collection of tracks for his first release. The organic approach highlights Kanishk impressive vocal and finger picking guitar ability with every song holding its own amongst each other.

‘In The Water’ was recorded over a 1 week period at Big Sister Studios and was the 22 year old singer songwriter’s first experience in a professional recording studio.

“It was the first time I’d ever recorded so I didn’t really know anything about the process going into the studio, so it was a bit of a risk. But I was working with Mark Myers and he was really helpful and great with explaining the process, and doing it in a collaborative way”.

Enlisting Mark Myers as Producer was a very easy decision for Kanishk, given his experience with The Middle East, Emma Louise and more recently Brealyn Sheehan and Leanne Tennant.

“Mark is a very renowned and respected in Cairns. Based on his experience working with artists and bands such as The Middle East, Emma Louise and Passenger, I was very eager to work with him. I got in touch with him through fellow Cairns musician Leanne Tennant, and he seemed to like my music style. I spent a week in the studio with Mark. We started by tracking the acoustic guitar and then adding different elements to each song, creating a range of styles. Some songs, such as Trance and Dripping were layered with drums, bass guitar and electric guitar. In contrast, other tracks such as Ripple were given more of a mellow vibe with strings and minimal percussion.”

Joining Kanishk in the studio for the recording of ‘In The Water’ on Drums and Percussion was Maru Nitor-Zammataro; best known for his work in The Montgomery Brothers, In The Element and Los Caracoles and Simon McMenamin (The McMenamins) on strings.

“Simon was really great to work with. Mark and I had worked out some arrangements we wanted which he came in, played and had some suggestions too which was great. He was really easy to work with”.

Kanishk was also lucky enough to receive ongoing advice from Spotlight Coordinator and local singer songwriter Leanne Tennant, whose advice was invaluable during the post production stage of the release.

“Leanne was really helpful, especially with the whole process of getting the music out there after it’s recorded. I didn’t know anything about digital distribution, printing or anything like that so to have someone who has done it all before and is willing to help other people, was really useful”.

Performing as a trio, Kanishk will launch the release this Friday at Lilo Wet Bar with support from Ray Danes and Tony. With live music recently making a return to Lilo, the night promises to be another cracker of an event with hard copies of the EP available to purchase on the night.

Kanishk launches In The Water at Lilo Wet Bar (Cnr Spence & Grafton St. Level 3 – Rydges Plaza) on Friday 10th June from 6.00pm. Support from Ray Danes and Tony. Entry is $5. Check out the Facebook event page for more details.
