After performing to packed houses at The Reef Hotel Casino in 2014 and 2015, former Stylus lead-singer and much loved songwriter Peter Cupples is returning to the Far North over three special nights this week at Vertigo Cocktail Bar & Lounge from Thursday 14th April to Saturday 16th April. With a new solo album in the works and an extensive career in the Australian Music Industry, Peter has spent the past four decades delighting audiences with his soul-based music and his upcoming April shows at Vertigo promise to be much the same.
Speaking to Peter recently, he had glowing admiration for the Far North and his shows over the years at The Reef Hotel Casino.
“I love coming up to Cairns and I especially love the local band I use. A lot of the people down south don’t realise how great the players are up in Cairns. There’s some real talent. I always look forward to jamming with Tommy See Poy and the boys, it’s always a great time”.
Throughout his career, Peter was a familiar face on television and had a regular spot on the Midday Show and also appeared often on shows such as Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Tonight Live with Steve Vizard, I.M.T and G.M.A. For 15-years straight he performed on the Channel 9 annual Christmas Eve spectacular and also worked very closely over the years with the late great Jon English, who he performed alongside at Vertigo last year.
“I was devastated (when he died). We just spent the last two weeks working together when it happened. We’d been celebrating our Uncorked Show which we’d done for 20 years. Not only we’re we partners in crime but we we’re the best of mates, it really hit hard”.
Peter is, and has always been, the consummate songwriter. He has written and recorded many albums over the years, as well as penning songs for other artists including John Farnham. After spending the last few years working on the musical ‘New Macdonald’s Farm’, Peter has now turned his attention to a solo project titled ‘Observations’.
“I need to be inspired or have something I need to write for. I can have times where I don’t write at all. I spent the last 5 years writing a musical so after that I needed time to simply clear my head and get back to simply being me, the songwriter. The new solo original album I’m working on at the moment is about 3 quarters finished. I’ll be taking it to America in July with the hope of getting it on a boutique label in The States”.
As part of The Reef Hotel Casino’s 20 year celebrations, a bevy of legendary Australian musicians are taking to the Vertigo stage throughout the year. Based on Peter’s previous appearances at Vertigo, this week’s shows are not to be missed.
“The first half of the show is going to be my history, my own songs over the years along with some Stylus hits. The second half of the show we’re going to be doing a tribute to Stevie Wonder. So we’re going to be ripping Stevie apart in the second set. Tommy (See Poy) is pretty keen for that!”
Peter Cupples performs at Vertigo Cocktail Bar & Lounge in The Reef Hotel Casino on Thursday 14th, Friday 15th & Saturday 16th April 2016. On Thursday 14th April, Peter’s show will be complemented by The Latin Quarter, kicking off in Vertigo at 8pm. Friday 15th and Saturday 16th April shows kick off at 9pm and feature support by The Nightshift (Friday evening) and The Tall Poppies (Saturday evening). All shows are free.
