Brealyn Sheehan – Temptation’s Door E.P Launch

Celebrating the much anticipated release of her debut EP Temptation’s Door, Cairns-based singer-songwriter Brealyn Sheehan is gearing up for a special hometown launch this Saturday 16th April with an intimate showcase at Crate 59 – the day after Temptation’s Door is released nationally. With the recent success of her first single “Forbidden Fruit” currently positioned at number 5 on the AMRAP Regional charts, the ethereal songstress has been honing her craft for the past two years, rapidly building a profile, fan base and own personal style in her music. Temptation’s Door is a testimony to romantic reverence, friendship and familial love, touching on universal themes of  emotion, desire and longing.

The Mark Myers produced six track starts with the haunting vibe of ‘Forbidden Fruit’ and effortlessly moves into the heartfelt ‘Weight Of Gold’, with Brealyn’s tone and lush vocals hooking the listener in for intimate affair with her lyrical content. The impressive ending of ‘Weight Of Gold’ featuring a local all-star choir including Tim Wright, Charmeone Quale, Josh Hore and many more.

The live favourite ‘Come A Little Closer’ starts how Brea is known for performing it. Voice and thumbed strummed chords on her Cole Clarke guitar, with the accompanying band entering on verse two to give the track the power we’ve always imagined. The trademark scat solo is nicely layered with Cameron Smith’s trumpet to great effect, while the impressive work continues into ‘My Body Is Your Orchestra’ with a nice Bossa Nova feel. The mariachi influence on ‘Want, Need, Don’t’ highlights the talent of her band with excellent mood changes from Steven ‘Papa’ Stanley on Double Bass and Tristan Barton on Drums. The offering finishes with the lullaby ‘Wayward Girl’, with Brealyn performing solo on the mysterious Ukulele Music Box. A beautiful closing to a well-constructed listen, one quickly hits repeat on.

Giving us her our first taste with her first single offering to radio in February, the suggestive ‘Forbidden Fruit’ captivated audiences, steadily making its way up the AIRIT AMRAP regional chart, debuting at number 8 and still sitting at number 5 at the end of March. Speaking to Sheehan recently about the songs success and its potential for even more movement in the future, Brealyn said:

“I’m thrilled about that (Forbidden Fruit). I had no real expectation or idea that it would get into the regional charts, so that was really exciting to see that it was played by the regional stations and also some commercial stations too”.

A crowd favourite and regular performer at original music staple ‘Resonate’, Saturdays launch at Crate 59 will bring to fruition months of hard-work and a lifetime of inspiration.  For this special release performance, she’s assembled a full backing band with 8 members lined up to recreate ‘Temptation’s Door’ in a live setting. With photos this week on Brealyn’s social media accounts of a rehearsal suggesting collaboration with her support acts Katie Jay and Blck Bird at the coming event. Brealyn hinted:

“There might be a little surprise install with the three of us doing something together, but you’ll have to wait and see.”

Produced by The Middle East’s Mark Myers at Big Sister Studios, The Temptation’s Door EP effortlessly explores genres from jazz, folk and blues, placing Brealyn alongside contemporaries such as Sarah Blasko, Clare Bowditch and Sarah McLachlan.

“I was nervous going in as I had no experience in a studio or any first-hand knowledge of what it was like to record. But from when I first arrived Mark made me feel very comfortable from the start and we pretty much got into it straight away. I did my tracking first and then we added more parts and went from there. It was good to see the different parts come together and exciting to see Mark add different suggestions here and there, and really build the character I was after with each song”.

With her lush instrumentation providing the perfect backdrop to her haunting and unique tone, ‘Temptations Door’ is an impressive listen from an artist who is still in early development and has a massive future ahead of them. The strong foundation she has planted on this recording will no doubt grow into an impressive career in the Australian Music Scene.
