Dee Lunar recently entered the Pandamonium Records studio to record the track “The Giving Tree” for the Northern Exposure 2021 compilation. We caught up with Dee about the track..
“The Giving Tree is one of those songs that came together really quickly , it started out as a very soft folk song but after playing it with drummer Joel Clement it morphed and changed into a heavier rock song. I had come up with the music but was really stuck on a theme for the lyrics and I remembered a youtuber suggesting when you’re stuck for an idea you google book titles to find the inspiration
So I thought I would try it and The classic 1964 children’s book The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein came up . I was instantly taken back, I remember reading this book as a child in early primary school, at the time I understood the notion of unconditional giving and that was the message I took from the story, a beautiful message . Fast forward to when I had small children of my own , I bought the book and as I was reading it to them I got really emotional, I realised this story definitely had a double meaning that many critics, scholars, phycologists and readers have debated for many years and the book has been described as one of the most divisive books in children literature
Some believe it is abusive relationship , as the tree gives and gives until there is literally nothing left but she is happy , she has Stockholm syndrome , others believe it reflects a mothers relationship where she treats her son as if he were a perpetual infant , an all giving mother who exists purely to be used
I decided to draw a small amount of inspiration from the theme , but creating my own positive spin, my own story where I am the tree , embracing my childhood understanding of unconditional giving and love , even though I have given and given and sometimes my bark is stripped raw, the giving tree it continues to grows in me”
