Sugarcane Collins – Going Back To Clarksdale

Blues troubadour Andy “Sugarcane” Collins originally made his mark on the local scene back in the 80s with the Baron River Drifters. Sugarcane now regularly tours the USA as a solo artist to critical acclaim. His previous albums have won him Chain awards for best Blues album of the year and best blues singer of the year.

Recently returned from his sixth and most successful tour of the USA where he launched his latest Blues album Going Back To Clarksdale, Andy “Sugarcane” Collins is saddling up again for another epic three month East Coast Tour kicking off in Airlie Beach on Jan 16th. Ask the man himself and he’ll tell you, ” I love the road, wandering from town to town and singing the blues”. The 2014 Australian Blues Singer of the Year is excited about the Australian release of Going Back To Clarksdale. And why wouldn’t he be when critics in the USA have said “Sugarcane is an authentic representative of the Blues”, “It’s a great album” and “Collins is one of the most entertaining Bluesmen touring today”.

The album was recorded in New Orleans and Clarksdale Mississippi employing hot local American musicians with the finishing touches added back home here in Cairns. The songs move from big brassy swing and smoky Jazz/Blues New Orleans style, up to the raw stripped back acoustic guitar/harmonica and small band sounds of the Delta. Says Collins ” I reckon it’s my best album yet”.

Sugarcane plays one show at Resonate at the Grand Hotel in Cairns on the 14th of Jan before heading off back on tour on the 16th of Jan. Andy’s set kicks off at 7.00pm and entry is free.
