This week at Resonate on the 14th Jan we present three of our top local artists that are actively out and about presenting their craft to the world – and making an impact.
Playing the 7.00pm slot this week is legendary blues troubadour Andy “Sugarcane” Collins. Making his mark on the local scene back in the 80 with the Baron River Drifters, Sugarcane now regularly tours the USA as a solo artist. Sugarcane is heading off on an east coast tour the day after his Resonate gig to promote his new album “Going Back To Clarksdale” which has been receiving rave reviews in the states. This will be your last chance to catch him before he heads off. “Sugarcane Collins is an authentic representative of the Blues”
Robert Fontenot – offBeat, New Orleans
Greta Stanley will be playing the 8.20 slot at Resonate this week. Greta just got back from a successful tour promoting her new album “Bedroom City”. The singer-songwriter, who hails from Mena Creek near Innisfail, released her debut EP Bedroom City last May and hasn’t really stopped since. The six- track release earned Greta acclaim on a national level, gaining considerable airplay and interest from heavyweights, including radio stations such as Triple J. Be sure to check out Eli Birchall’s excellent review of Bedroom City.
Playing the 9.30 slot at Resonate this week is Ray Danes. Ray Danes, a 23 year old Cairns based singer songwriter, began his music career under the influence of artists such as Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard, developing his own unique songwriting and vocal style over the past couple of years.
The son of a singer and pianist, Ray inherited his mother’s ear for a tune and is a natural performer with a gift for narrative. Though it’s early days in his career, Ray was spotted by Ritzland Records, who promptly offered to put his music out to a wider audience and offer him management services. Recently he supported Ash Grunwald at the Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns and won a slot at The Tablelands Folk Festival where he recorded a “Van Jam” film clip. In July 2014, he launched his debut single ‘Falling’ at The Grace Darling Hotel in Melbourne with a sixpiece band performing all the tracks from his new album ‘In Fear’.
Ray’s music is a modern take on the folk rock genre that has a unique and often haunting feel of its own. Through it all, Ray’s pure and easy tone effortlessly delivers the stories and experiences that matter to him. Rays says most of his songs “are about someone else who is in a situation. ‘Falling’ is kind of a stalker song’.
Resonate is staged every Thursday night at the Grand Hotel in Cairns. Kitchen opens at 6.00, Resonate blasts off at 7.00pm entry is free!
