MUSIC runs deep into the veins of Danielle Caruana.
She’s the wife of John Butler (John Butler Trio), and sister of Nicky Bomba (Melbourne Ska Orchestra and John Butler Trio) and Michael Caruana (The Truth).
Outside of her musical family, Danielle holds her own, boasting a succesful career comprising of industry awards and ARIA nominations, and playing alongside Tommy Spender in the group Mama Kin Spender.
Musically, Danielle goes by the name of Mama Kin, a name that was given to her by Melbourne Ska Orchestra frontman and former John Butler Trio drummer, Nicky Bomba.
“We were toying with the idea of doing a creative project together called Kin,” Danielle said.
“A couple of days into the process I found out I was pregnant with my second child and he called me the Mama Kin.”
Originally playing and touring with her brothers Nicky and Michael as Mama Kin, the project evolved when Danielle connected with producer Tommy Spender (from Australian rock group Offcuts) to create Mama Kin Spender.
Together they released their debut album Golden Magnetic in 2018 which was nominated for the 2018 ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album.
“It’s a stripped back duo of brooding guitars, primal drums and howling harmonies,” Danielle says.
“The songs rattle, roll and tremble, from block party to heart rending ballad.”
A chorus of singers arranged by Virginia Bott (Brighter Later, First Chorus Band of Singers) will join the duo adding a special treat for music lovers.
Mama Kin Spender play the Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 9 November.
