A great turn out at last week’s Resonate, and we get ready to do it again this Thursday night at the Grand with 3 talented troubadours.
First up playing the 7.00pm slot is Eli Birchall. Eli grew up in the Daintree & Tablelands and started learning guitar at age 15. In 2007 he relocated to Broome W.A and started the band “Cumulo” with Timothy Delany & Tanya Ransom. They played loads of gig, got nominated for the West Australian Music Industry Award, made it to the finals of the “Next Big Thing” competition out of hundreds of bands from across the stage and released a self titled E.P. The Band then moved to Melbourne for 4 years and according to Eli Melbourne was “Cold and grey, awesome and wonderful but cold and grey”. After 13 years away Eli moved back to North QLD after realising it actually is really beautiful up here. Eli is currently enjoying playing the vibrant local music scene both as a solo artist and also as “The Sleeping Suns” a collaboration with vocalist/guitarist Will Maslen and other talented local musicians.
Playing the 8.20 slot is up and coming songstress Valerie Villa. For someone that has only been writing her own songs for a year or so her songs show a maturity that belies her experience. I heard a rumour that Valerie will be unveiling some new songs this week..
GG Davies will be playing the 9.30 slot this week. GG Davies was born in Sydney 1952 and did 20 years in the army, never firing a shot in anger. Bankruptcy and divorce forged his music and his move to FNQ at turn of the century, where he started writing his own blues – influenced by such greats as Cocker, Ritchie Havens and Tom Waits. The blues have now taken a firm grip on GG and he now blends original blues with Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Elmore James. GG recently released his new E.P “Soul Shine”. You can read Mitch Sullivans interview with GG Here.
Resonate is staged every Thursday night at the Grand Hotel in Cairns. Kitchen opens at 6.00, Resonate blasts off at 7.00pm entry is free!
